You’ve woken up in a strange room with no memory of who you are and why you’re there. Looking on the wall, you recognize your own face on a poster for a porn movie. You are Babsy, the protagonist of the game Grit Porn Video Tapes by Italian studio Iisidore Games.

In this first-person adventure puzzle game, you will search for notes, audio recordings, and videotapes to find out why you, an insanely popular porn star, supposedly erased your own memories and what has exactly happened here the previous night.

Rini: Dun, dun, dun!

Meanwhile, you will be treated to very explicit videos and images of yourself performing with various men, as well as the presence of hidden dangers.

Rini: Not just herpes.

On the outset, this concept sold me. One of the problems with the adult game space is variety. Not in sexual flavors, there’s plenty of those to go around, but in concepts and types of games. A first-person puzzle adventure game is certainly unique, and I’ve been a fan of such games since the early days of Myst and The Journeyman Project. Add in the adult factor, and I’m immediately sold, as I was with Lust for Darkness. The problem is that maybe my enthusiasm for this type of game is why I might be overlooking a few of the more glaring flaws in this game.

Rini: And those glare more than the light off the girl’s nipples.

I can easily see why it has a low score on Steam. The part of that seems to be because several people had a hard enough time just figuring out the first puzzle to get out of the room.

Rini: Real, real NASA-types there.

Plus, there’s been a game update since release, so it’s possible some of these people’s problems have already been fixed. The first part of the game is set in a luxurious spa. Several rooms are open to the sky. There are pools and hot tubs and several lounging chairs.

Rini: Okay, so if you’re gonna have rooms open to the sky, you’re gonna get pooped on by little birdies as they fly by while you’re banging. Just like to mention that.

They don’t show that in porn.

Rini: I know. *CUT*

There are also video cameras hooked to TVs around the complex. Playing the TV will show various sex scenes in the area where the cameras are pointed. Back out and select the TV again can sometimes bring up extra scenes.

Your goal is to get as much information out of each room to eventually unlock the second part of the game. But be warned, there are dangers wandering around the level that can damage and even kill you if they see you.

Let’s go ahead and get the problematic parts of the game out of the way. The big one that threw me was a fake-out videotape in the VCR you’re supposed to put a tape into to play the game’s main exposition dump. I thought something was broken with the game. My advice is when you find the VCR, just eject the videotape into your inventory and throw it into the extra storage trunk located on the main floor. That gets it out of your inventory and out of your way. You’ll need to find the videotape locked in a safe in one of the other rooms. As far as the other puzzles go, you’re on your own. But I will mention not all codes are four digits long.

Rini: In short, use your brain. Don’t just be fascinated by the pointy, shiny nipples.

Secondly is the possible use of AI. The developer has not listed AI use on its Steam page and the only visual part that seems to have earmarks is a section of the videotape with the Babsy documentary on it. This video clip is of the outside of a theater.

Rini: That shit that, what is it, like maybe two or three seconds? Nightmare fuel, total nightmare fuel.

Since I couldn’t find more extensive credits, I’m not sure if the voice work was AI or just some non-native English speakers.

Rini: Listen to that stuff again. It’s AI. There’s some hallmarks to AI speaking and it’s not even a good modeling speaker that they used on some of them. <AI voice imitation> One of the things is you can always tell it is because the sentences always have a weird cadence and end down. All sentences always end down.<AI voice Imitation ends>

And that’s one of the big things. And then there was like the British guy. The cadence is just wacky and off. So all of the spoken lines are AI. It’s terrible, which is sad.

Cause you know what? I just like to keep mentioning there are literally thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands maybe, of voice actors out there that will do this shit for free, people, free. You can go onto Reddit. You can go on castingcall.club. You can go on a shit ton of discords and say, “Hey, I’m doing an adult video game. I’d love to have you do this for me.” And you will get so many people auditioning for you with great quality sound and great performances cause they just want to get experience and they will do it again for free.

I’m jumping off my soapbox now.

The subtitles on the main VHS tape have noticeable flubs like Babsy being listed as ABC, BBC, Bab-Z, and other such names.

Lastly, on the low end of the scale is some of the 3D models are inconsistent. Now I’m not expecting AAA shine on this game. However, the Babsy model is insanely detailed as it should be because you’re going to be spending a lot of time looking at things going in and out of her vagina and other orifices.

Rini: It was dark, it was light, it was dark, it was light.

But when looking through some of the video cameras there’s a much less detailed model used. I suppose it’s to match the bare bones male model also being used.

Rini: Okay, if you play this game, stop looking at the vagina. Stop looking at the tits. Pay attention to the male models cause, holy shit, those are funny.

There’s also some fluid textures, mostly semen that aren’t as detailed and can be jarring on a more detailed body. And the scene where Babsy is talking to you via the videotape is definitely in the creepy uncanny valley.

Other bits are minor quibbles. While you can play the VHS tape several times, the audio logs will only play once. So if you miss or forget something, you’re SOL. Picking up certain items to read will get you placeholder text. Hit boxes for push buttons seem very small and certain items seem finicky to use. The battery use on some gadgets is also inconsistent. The flashlight will stop working if the batteries are used up but the handheld camcorder seems to continue to work even with an empty battery. None of these are deal breakers but small annoyances can add up when matched with the larger ones.

Story-wise, this is a mixed bag. Babsy herself, both as the player character and the voice on the tapes doesn’t seem to be a reliable narrator. So there’s some story inconsistencies running through the game.

Rini: Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. A drugged out porn star isn’t a reliable narrator? Shock me, shock me, shock me.

Hey, we don’t kink shame here.

Most of it will shake out by the end but several bits of information seem to pop out out of the blue. This may also just be a translation problem. I’ve watched enough Eurotrash art films to know some things don’t go smoothly cross-culturally.

Otherwise, in the end, I enjoyed the hell out of the experience. Most of the game is rendered very well. I was pleasantly surprised how nice this Unity game looked. I would have guessed Unreal. I’d love to stay at this spa and the other environments are also wonderful as game environments. As stated before, Babsy herself is really detailed. They also sprang for a motion capture model for Babsy. So most of her movements look really good. The puzzles are pretty decent, only a couple stumped me because of the reasons I mentioned earlier. Lots to look at, lots to explore. The artwork of Babsy looks like they just took renders of her Unity model rather than using AI. So kudos for that.

And if you want sex in your game, you’re going to get it in spades. Outside of the videotapes of Babsy’s sex scenes, all of the beds and several of the lounge chairs are selectable to have Babsy have sex with one or more male partners. Some repeat and Babsy only says a handful of lines. There’s a camcorder that allows you to see hidden things but also shows you other couples having sex in the spa and other places.

Now, I’ve been purposefully vague about the game outside of the spa, but that’s because it’s one huge spoiler otherwise. What I will tell you is that there is one ending, but there are two ways to get there. One of which is a much more extended storyline and more sexual content. This allows for some extra replayability and a great touch.

So would I recommend this game? Yes, very much so, but temper your expectations. I’m hopeful that this or other developers make more of these types of games. Just drop the AI, please.

Rini: Oh my goodness. The anachronisms in the game. So the game’s supposed to take place in 1983? And as both BeelzeRog and I are Gen Xers, it’s like, okay, yeah, that camcorder, that camcorder didn’t, oh, for some reason my Minnesota just came out. So that camcorder definitely did not come out until mid to late 90s. Oh, and the other thing, BeelzeRog is showing me the game footage and all this weird stuff. And me like him, I love adventure games and I love puzzle games and stuff like that. But some of the stuff for me, it would have been deal-breaking because of the cost. The retail price is $30. BeelzeRog got it on sale for $10.

That eight hours includes the time that I went back and spent getting video recording.

Rini: Yeah, and I get you’re a small studio, possibly a one-person or two-person deal, but come on, there was some basic QCing that should have been done in alpha, much less ship product, like the passwords.examples on all the photos. I don’t even mind the goofy clipping stuff like that because I play Bethesda games. And I’m putting in my own personal opinion on this. BeelzeRog obviously enjoyed it, but those kinds of game-breaking mistakes and bugs and just simple QCing things for a $30 retail game, that’s unacceptable.
