Hey, everyone, so we’re 4 episodes in and I’m going to deviate a little bit. If you caught the series trailer I recently put out, I mentioned I want to talk about other adult game topics, so that’s what I’m going to do. I had another idea in mind, but I’m having problems making the script gel together. Then a new installment for a game series I was thinking about reviewing dropped and I thought, hey, let’s do this! So here is a review of Lust for Darkness and its upcoming sequel “Lust from Beyond“.
The first game, “Lust for Darkness“, is a First Person Perspective erotic horror game that was released by Polish developer Movie Games in 2018. You spend most of your time as Jonathan Moon, who’s wife, Amanda, mysteriously disappeared a year ago. He receives a letter from her with instructions to get to the secluded Yelverton Manor, which Jonathan finds is the headquarters of the Cult of Ecstasy. They are fascinated by an alternate dimension called Lusst’gha, a land of promised eternal ecstasy. And this night just happens to be when they are planning to open the portals wide. Jonathan must sneak through the mansion, avoiding cultists and finding his wife. Meantime, he finds portals opening up that allow him to transverse to Lusst’gha, a truly alien and dangerous world. In both worlds, you will find clues about Lusst’gha and the Cult of Ecstasy’s history, much of which shows that everything is even crazier than it seems.
In Darkness, it is very much a puzzle & stealth game. You’ll be picking up objects, opening drawers and reading notes. You spend time skulking around and even if you are disguised, you will attract attention if you spend too much time lingering. There is almost no ability for combat, which, honestly, might have made things easier. Nothing more frustrating than seeing a kitchen full of sharp objects and not being able to use them. Still, the ability to fight back is usually not a part of these games and it is better to hide if you can and run if you must. There is also something of a sanity stat and if you spend too much time around things that can disturb you, you will lose control of your character.
“Lust From Beyond” takes place after the events of “Lust for Darkness” and, along with members of the Cult of Ecstasy, we are introduced to the Scarlet Lodge, which has a far different plan for Lusst’gha. While the full game is not out as of this recording, two free-to-play prologues have been released, one simply titled Prologue and the other called Scarlet, which has just been released. The graphics have definitely been improved, there is now an inventory system, as well as bandages and tranquilizer pills to help with health and sanity respectfully. They have also added weapons on a certain level, but your character is not some special ops badass and combat should still be avoided if possible.
But the big question is “The Sex”. So let’s break this down. Yes, it is very erotic, but also very dark. And I’m not just talking about the brightness levels. I would describe it as “Horny Lovecraft”, where the unknowable Elder Gods are replaced by powerful beings who’s existence centers on sexual & sensual ecstasy. The Cult of Ecstasy dwellings are very sensual, with lots of deep reds, dark woods, and soft textures everywhere. Several bits of erotic art are on the walls and there are the sexual totems everywhere, calling back to sexual artwork found by archeologists. My favorite callback is the statue of Pan & the Goat, a replica of a statue found in the ruins of Herculaneum, near Pompeii, that scandalized the Victorians who unearthed it. Meantime, there is also a lot of human sex going on as well. All… over… the… place.
Lusst’gha, on the other hand, is a mix of Geiger, Polish Surrealism, and dash of Hellraiser. You spend most of your time in tunnels with rare glimpses to a world outside. Everything is extremely organic and anytime there is something that looks like more standard technology, it looks jarringly out of place. Many phallic and vaginal objects, several of which have to do with handling locks or puzzles. And then there are the… um… displays is the best way I can put it. Some that look like statues or maybe what happened to people who came here before. But it’s not all fun and games, there is danger lurking around many corners.
If you are a fan of the mystery puzzle games, classics like “Myst“, “The Journeyman Project“, or “The 7th Guest“, or more modern versions like “Amnesia“, “Going Home“, or “The Witness“. AND you are not put off by visuals that are both arousing and disturbing, then this is a game series for you. Currently available on Steam, XBox One, Playstation 4 & Nintendo Switch. I know I’m looking forward to the full release. (Additional note: The Lust Universe games have had to create M-rated versions of their games for console releases)
