it is nice to have a good game to take your mind off of things. And just such a game is cute little Metroid-vania platformer by the name of “FlipWitch: Forbidden Sex Hex” by Momo Games & Critical Bliss.
In this game, you play as the apprentice to a witch master named Beatrix. After many years, Beatrix has decided to teach you a forbidden spell.
Rini: Oooooooooo!
But to do so, she needs a Fairy Bubble and sends you on a quest to get it from the Great Fairy.
Rini: OK, I’m thinking Fairy Bubble might be a sex toy.
It doesn’t look like one.
Rini: Really? ‘Cause that’s a missed opportunity there.
But it turns out the Great Fairy is under the spell of the Goblin Queen’s Dominatrix,
Rini: And again, I see Jareth the Goblin King in drag. Someone, someone draw that. Get on that.

Rini: OK
…so she must be defeated. After freeing the Great Fairy, she informs you that her Fairy Bubble has been stolen and sends you to Spirit City to find it. Once you have it, you return to Beatrix who teaches you the forbidden art of gender-flipping. After that, she sends you off on a quest to defeat the evil Chaos Witch that is corrupting the land.
Rini: I object to chaos sounding bad ’cause chaos is good. I’m a chaos… I always play chaos goblins. I’m a chaos goblin…. raargh.
To unlock the Chaos domain, you need to collect 6 keys from various bosses, starting with the Goblin Queen. As you go along, you also need to help various people in the game with their quests, as doing so will allow Beatrix to transfer some more of her power to you, giving you more health and upgrading your power.
Rini: Absolute Power
You will also be able to get passive and active skills, either from finding them in the different worlds or buying from vendors, which will allow you to jump higher, vacuum up coins from defeated enemies, and get past barriers, as well as various costumes to help complete quests.
Rini: I find that interesting a mechanic that you get costumes… So, the costumes actually aren’t just cosmetic, they have a function?
Yes.
Rini: Oh, that’s kinda cool.
Your character has 2 main attacks, a more powerful melee attack and a less powerful distance attack. Both can be charged. Amusingly, there is no difference between your male and female forms as far as ability goes. Your attacks, speed, and jumping abilities are the same in either form.
The FlipWitch ability is instead used for getting past certain doors or barriers, being able to use certain platforms or absorb certain attacks. It even helps with starting and finishing missions. Some NPCs will give you a stock greeting in one form and then beg for your help in another.
Rini: “Stay a while and listen”
Show up as one gender in a specific outfit can often start or complete a mission.
Rini: That’s a cool mechanic. I like that.
As this is a Metroid-vania style game, there is a fair amount of backtracking involved. Also, enemies respawn after you leave an area.
Rini: OK, that’s silly. I don’t like that.
Some areas will only become open to you once certain abilities are gained. There are also areas hidden in walls that you have to search for to find. These sometimes hide collectable tokens that can be redeemed in Genesis’ Lucky Machines scattered around the map in more ‘civilized’ areas. These unlock animations. Fortunately, you don’t have to backtrack on foot all the time, thanks to a network of save points and crystal teleports sprinkled around the map.
As with most platformers, there are little tricks involved. Some enemies are stunned by distance attacks, others by melee.
Rini: Some by boobies.
Also finding the right combination of main and passive abilities can be as much of a skill as being able to quickly switch genders as you hop from one platform to another. I’d personally recommend using a game controller, which turned out to be easier than a keyboard & mouse.
Rini: Kinda like Assassin’s Creed. I like being able to button mash in combat! Anyways…
All in all, this is a really fun game. The sprite work is really fun and cute. It has a great soundtrack that stays with you well after you put the game down.
Rini: (Starts singing the “Super Mario Theme”)
Ah, memories of working in the arcade…
There are some stock sex-on-defeat animations when you die, but the really fun animations become available after you complete quests and are suitably rewarded,
Rini: Suitably… rewarded… really?
…and all of the animations are accessible from the gallery. Most of the sex is heterosexual with some lesbian and tentacles.
Rini: That’s kinda a shame. I’d like to see more mix-up with that, but, whatever…
But it’s not without its problems, at least for me. Sometimes the jumping can be very finicky and I occasionally got hung up on ledges. It is not always obvious where to go next after you’ve defeated a boss that opens up another level.
Rini: So is that bad game design or is that on the player?
For me, I’d say, six of one, half-dozen of the other.
Rini: Alright.
A fortune teller in Spirit City can offer clues, but you’re basically on your own. It would help if you could zoom in on the world map in order to get a better look at entrances and exits. Some of the boss fights varied greatly in difficulty, with me having an easier time with some of the later ones than the early ones. Though you will need to make sure you are as close to full strength for the Chaos Witch because… ho, boy…
Rini: So, I mean, a lot of times I found that by the time you get Endgame, you’re essentially a god.
You’re not quite a god, even at that point. One of the main reasons you’d need to be at full strength for the Chaos Witch is because one of the things that gets leveled up is the amount of healing items you can carry.
Rini: Ahhhhhh…
But besides these minor complaints, this is a solid game and I highly recommend it. Flipwitch: Forbidden Sex Hex is currently available for $14.99 on Steam, get it while you can.
